Railway signalling is a system used to direct railway traffic and keep every train communication connected at all times.

For smooth and efficient functioning of most modern transportation systems, a reliable communication system is necessary. In metro and railway systems, these become even more crucial due to the sheer number of components involved.

Customer Challenges:

Signal transmission of data is required to be sent from the rolling stock sub systems to the Control Centre. It can be critical as trains need ruggedized products to withstand a great deal of wear from factors, like mechanical stress, humidity, dirt, dust, shock and vibrations and adherence to the EN50155 (Equipment for Rolling Stock) and EN50121 (Railway EMC Standard).

In addition, to combat any interference, the technology needs to dramatically improve the reliability and quality of wireless connections which is needed to guarantee the wireless connection stability at all times. In most cases, infrastructure variations network devices may lead to difficulties of maintenance and troubleshooting because users are unable to manage these via a management software.

Lacking proper communication systems could lead to certain unexpected incidents. For instance: trains operation can be affected due to a faulty train or disconnection of train status with the control center which can lead to an accident on the railway.


XD Solutions: Wireless Data Communication System

Wireless Data Communication System (WDCS), provides data communication between rolling stocks subsystems and control centre, based on Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11). Wireless infrastructures are deployed along trackside to provide signal coverage between rolling stock and wayside equipment while maintaining a seamless and uninterrupted communication.

Hirschmann™ industrial Ethernet system is assembled and deployed to achieve a robust and highly secure network. The design comes with two identical and fully redundant networks (Network A and B) for both trackside and backbone functionality, which allows the system to communicate simultaneously on both networks. This helps to build a strong and reliable wireless connection.

Wireless Networks are operating on different frequencies and unique network ID and used across all associated access points (APs) in order to ensure that the failure of one network does not affect the functionality of the other redundant network. With the provisioning of two independent networks, data between the wayside and onboard components are transmitted in parallel over both redundant paths.

Network visibility equals high availability. Industrial HiVision, the new state-of-the-art software for industrial network management, configures and monitors all the administrable devises and all individual network component to create an overall communication system.
